They're Repeating across America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis predicted his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' into 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever someone steals your outer garment you should give them your pullover as well.

The evident and clear truth that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of radical love concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Among Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to see the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the best parts in US history.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to that which renders it unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply acting as if the most damaging about the nation and Christianity was nonexistent; it means both modesty and faith, a combination that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
